A Family House

Family House I is the first of a series of family homes designed by Spinagu. The 1920's Craftsman Bungalow is sited in a historically preserved neighborhood of Los Angeles, limiting the renovation work entirely to the interior. To update the house's layout for contemporary living, the traditional front living spaces of the Craftsman house were reorganized into a sequence of living shared spaces progressing from street to back garden. The rearrangement allowed both bedroom and living room access to the back yard. To provide maximum space, the architecture studio rearranged the bedrooms around a generous corridor that acts as a foyer rather than a hallway. A central wall separating the living from private bedrooms offers itself as a space for hidden closets, maximizing walls to become storage.

The kids bathroom is wrapped with exuberant terrazzo tiles reminiscent of playground rubber, while the master bathroom provides for a calm retreat. Together, the bedrooms, living and kitchen spaces comprise 1500 square feet.  The expansive front porch opens directly to a distinctive entryway and airy living room. For the interior, red maple wall paneling exudes a domestic warmth. Spinagu's signature graphic cutouts and playful profiles are wrapped around surfaces to distinguish entryways and provide distinctive spaces, elevating the everyday.
